There was a frost this morning and despite it being sunny there was a cold N/E breeze cutting across the marsh today which seems to keep the birds quite quiet as regards to flying, despite that the marsh is alive with bird sound especially the warblers and as one women I met today described it as sounding like a dawn chorus all day long. I managed several good pictures including this nice one of a Common Buzzard.
Unusual Visitors 20/04/2015
I have seen a few of these lately, yes Common Cranes, this one was one of a pair photographed over Upton Fen on the 20/04/2015. I saw a group of 4 several times, a couple of weeks ago over Woodbastwick Marsh. I have never seen them before and although common on the continent, quite unusual in the UK. I understand a few over-winter here and about 9 pairs breed at Horsey, but that could be increasing and I wouldn’t be surprised if 1 or 2 pairs are breeding around the Upton/ Woodbastwick area. They remind me of Vultures as they ride the thermals getting higher and higher until they disappear from sight.
The Snipe 24/04/2015
These Snipe were pictured again at Upton, I was quite lucky to get these pictures as they had been disturbed by the Lapwings that in turn had been disturbed by a hunting Marsh Harrier and went up to to fend it away from their patch and presumably nests. https://www.rspb.org.uk/discoverandenjoynature/discoverandlearn/birdguide/name/s/snipe/
The Marsh Harrier
It was a lovely sunny morning and we left Norwich fairly early, about 7.15, (when I say ‘we’ I refer to me and my little terrier called ‘Ellie’, my constant companion) and arrived at Upton about 30 mins later, parked near the dyke and began walking around the marsh. I took my 400mm prime lens as my 800mm would have been too heavy as I was feel a bit tired due to lots of walking a various other pursuits during the week, well there was plenty of wildlife about and I got some good pictures of Marsh Harriers, Snipe, Shellduck, Mallard, Lapwing to name a few, all in flight,, which I prefer some of which I will add later. http://www.norfolkwildlifetrust.org.uk/wildlife-in-norfolk/nature-reserves/reserves/upton-broad-and-marshes
Launch Day 25/04/2015
Yes Blog launch day and it really going to be a photographic diary of my hobby, which coincidentally is photography, mainly wildlife, but will also include some scenery about Norfolk, usually the broads where I seem to spend a vast amount of my time either taking photos of birds, fishing or walking.
